Racism Rears Its Ugly Head In San Francisco

In Sunday’s game between the Baltimore Orioles and San Francisco Giants, an ugly incident occurred which helped show that we do not yet live in a ‘post-racial’ America. In the 9th inning of a lopsided game where the O’s were up 10-2, a fan threw a banana at Baltimore centerfielder Adam Jones. Bananas are commonly used at soccer games by racist fans to denigrate black players. The obvious implication is that the black player is ape-like and sub-human.

Jones had just homered in the top of the 9th inning to put a cap on the blowout victory and a series win of the Giants. Apparently, that infuriated one San Francisco fan enough that he had to let his inner racist out and embarrass his city and its team. After the game, Jones went to Twitter to express his frustration about the incident:

While he was met with a lot of sympathy from fans, who also expressed outrage at the incident, apparently he also had many people tweet him back and defend the banana throwing. Jones didn’t take too kindly to those tweets, as this was his response:

Finally, he stated that this might lead to him completely leaving social media:

For the Giants part, the team is looking into this and taking the incident very seriously. As of now, they have not been able to find anything linking a fan with the banana throwing. However, they did state that they’d continue to review surveillance footage and see if they can find a positive identification. Hopefully, this is not an ugly trend that we are seeing form in baseball. Just last week, a Jackie Robinson statue was defaced with racist slurs and imagery. Let’s hope that we don’t see this this type of ugliness continue to sully the national pastime.

The Os did not sweep the series, they took it 2 to 1. Is all your reporting that accurate?

This article has been corrected. The Orioles had swept the previous series with San Diego.

“Jones had just homered in the top of the 9th inning to put a cap on the blowout victory and a series win of the Giants.” Nowhere in the article does it say that the Orioles swept the series!!! Back to the drawing board, and this time, get your facts straight!!

The original commenter was correct. I had shown it as a sweep of the Giants before making the correction.
