ESPN’s resident “rambling bobblehead ” Stephen A Smith has made a very bold prediction about the future of the Los Angeles Lakers. During an appearance on ESPN 710’s “Mason and Ireland”, Smith doubled down on his previous claims that Durant would leave the Thunder after this season. According to him, both Durant and Westbrook will eventually leaving Oklahoma to join the Lakers:

“the biggest reasons I’m told, that Kevin Durant may have the Lakers at the top of his list, is because the Lakers have been led to believe, by whom specifically I do not know, but the Lakers have been led to believe that it is a very good chance that the following year Russell Westbrook is coming.”
This seems like a very strange scenario because it banks on a lot of hypotheticals. If Mark Cuban can’t even secure a deal with DeAndre Jordan over a period of days, why would Kevin Durant rest his whole career of a handshake agreement made years in advance? Unless a trade can be made to facilitate Westbrook’s expedient departure, this whole concept seems extremely intangible. Of course, this is not the first time Smith has made a ridiculous prediction.
Let’s examine his track record. Sure – Stephen has made some correct predictions, but he also said:
On top of all these statements, Smith has claimed it’s “rare” that he’s been wrong about things (and I’m not even going to analyze his terrible social commentary again).
All I’m saying is: the “First Take” is the one directors usually don’t use because it’s terrible – so let’s not get too excited.
